Brilliant Cut Glass
Tobias has been training under the guidance of master cutter James Witchell and will soon be putting Brilliant Cut Glass back on the map for Bristol, Bath and beyond
Brilliant cut glass is the act of engraving ornamental patterns or lettering into glass using water fed stone grind wheels. A once booming craft, has left its legacy all over England, beautiful old panels still adorn homes and public houses around the country.
Quite often accompanied with other crafts such as signwriting, acid etching and French embossing, brilliant cut glass adds brilliance and dimension that is unsurpassed.
Large brilliant cut plate glass as we know it, was first introduced to this country in the 1850’s by Mark Bowden of Bristol with the invention of his scale beam. The use of a scale beam took the weight of large glass panels allowing the cutter to create large ornate patterns on windows and doors.
