The Rhythm of Life
The rhythm of life is what I like to call the slight convexity of the bottom line of a brush made Roman Letter.
The slight curve made by tension and twist of the brush as the sign writer closes the open ends of the last two twisted strokes.
As he does so, he feels; follows and drives the brush; connecting point to point in one fluid motion. Like a train passing stations or waves crashing on the shore... It carries the energy of absolute certainty to reach its destination.
The writer has premeditated and practised the stroke many times like the precision of an engineer's calculations. With experience and practice the letter maker learns the kinetic movements by heart. When the hand, eye and tool move in unison letters are; like a crashing wave, migrating bird or a blossoming rose.
no distraction should be made, no hesitation... The wave does not wonder in which direction to travel. To be a Signwriter you must adopt this nature of rhythm.
Every day, every job is completely unique and unpredictable from the next. Signwriting could be compared to the uniqueness of a snowflake; not only is each job unique, but each Signwriter is unique in his style, experience and state of mind.
The paradox is every unique letter, every stroke must carry the message of the whole sign. Each unique character must be united in harmony with the others by a common rule. All Signwriters share this common goal, similarly how a Rose bush shares a unified blossom and colour harmony.
Every detail has been considered by the Signwriter so he may weave a unique but unified design to uphold the clients message with quality craftsmanship, artistic style, and precise geometry
A huge thanks goes out to all that have supported, inspired and taught me!
Thank you for reading.
Yours faithfully,
